ORGANIC OR FIBREGLASS?
Asphalt shingles are available in two varieties fibreglass and organic, though organic shingles are quickly becoming a thing of the past. What’s the difference? Both are made out of asphalt covered with granules, it’s the material underneath is the distinguishing factor. “Organic” shingles are made mostly of cardboard, wood and other such “organic” products saturated in asphalt. Fibreglass shingles are made out of a mat of glass fibre (also saturated with asphalt), which strengthens the shingle, making it MUCH more heat resistant and much less likely to tear, crack and curl as your roof ages. Most organic shingles are now discontinued, as fibreglass is a much better alternative in the Calgary roofing market and all over the world.
3-TAB OR ARCHITECTURAL?
There are many styles of asphalt shingles, grouped into two major categories: 3-Tab shingles and Architectural shingles. 3-Tab shingles are very traditional, with a brick like appearance, and lie flat on the surface of the roof deck. They are thinner than architectural shingles, so they do not last as long. Architectural shingles and more fancy, with a raised profile look and varieties that can mimic the look of slate or cedar shingles. While architectural shingles are great to add a custom look to your home, and can certainly modernize and increase the curb appeal of your property, 3-Tab shingles are still commonly used on low-slope roofing installations in some circumstances. 10 years ago, 3-tab shingles were much less expensive than architectural, but the cost difference now is minimal, making architectural asphalt shingles the most poular choice among homeowners.
MANUFACTURERS AND BROCHURES
IKO Industries/Canroof Corporation is a global leader in the manufacturing of quality residential and commercial roofing products. CRC (Canroof Corporation) is the Canadian ‘brand’ of IKO Industries making identical shingles with different wrappers. Fortress Roofing Calgary has been installing IKO / CRC shingles since the day we opened our doors, and they are still our best selling product. Available in a wide range of styles, colors and types; with warranties ranging from 25 to 50 years, IKO / CRC asphalt shingles offer a fashionable line of products with affordable prices. Our most common shingle is the Cambridge/Biltmore Shingle but many other Premium Styles are also available.
Malarkey Roofing Products has been manufacturing high-end asphalt roofing materials since 1956. Based out of Portland Oregon, Malarkey has become an industry leader with their wide range of product options. Malarkey’s most commonly products are their ‘Alaskan’ 3-Tabs and ‘Highlander’Architectural Shingles and shingles made specifically for high wind areas. What they are really famous for, however is their Legacy Shingle, which has a Class 4 impact rating and can stand up to hail like no other shingle on the market. Legacy is made using SBS (Rubber) Modified Bitumen – so when hail hits, it literally ‘bounces’ off. There have been many Calgary hail storms that have left the Legacy roofs untouched when entire neighborhoods of roofing shingles have been destroyed. Tired of hail claims? Legacy Architectural Shingles are not invincible – but they are pretty close! Contact us for more info or to get a free estimate.
